Reading
SLE: Read with proficiency; Apply study skills
L.O. I will use context clues and reference materials to decode unfamiliar terms and phrases.
Our class will continue reading The Watsons Go to Birmingham-1963 in February. The story is told from the point of view of a fourth grade boy and explores topics such as bullying, growing up, being part of a family, and treating others with respect no matter who they are. Parents will notice the significance of the date and location mentioned in the title. I encourage students and parents to have an ongoing discussion regarding the topics in this book.
Consider purchasing the book for your student so he or she will be able to write notes and highlight.
Writing
SLE: Write with proficiency
L.O. I will use different types of sentences to improve sentence fluency. I will diagram sentence parts.
Science
SLE: Commit to a healthy way of life
L.O. I will demonstrate understanding of nutrition and apply scientific knowledge.
We will wrap up our nutrition unit this week. Next week we will discuss the effects of drugs and alcohol on the human body.
Math
SLE: Meet curriculum standards
L.O. I will add and subtract fractions.
We did it! The students mastered long division by one and two digits. Now we are doing a quick review of basic fraction concepts before we master finding equivalent fractions and adding and subtracting fractions. It won't be long until we are ready for decimals!
See the "Eduplace" link up above for games, critical thinking problems, and other fun ways to learn more about fractions.
Religion
SLE: Demonstrate knowledge of scripture, teachings, and traditions
L.O. I will compare and contrast baptism and confirmation.
