Mrs. Roach's Fifth Grade Class
What does the flag in our classroom mean? We are wrapping up a unit in which the students interact with the history, setting, and characters of Colonial Boston. This flag's design, attributed to Benjamin Franklin, was meant to encourage the thirteen British colonies to work together during the French and Indian War. Later the image of the rattlesnake appeared on various flags and publications to remind colonists how powerful they could be, even against the British Empire, if they worked together. It is an intimidating image, and that was part of its purpose. As most of the characters in our town are Patriots/Rebels, our townspeople generally agree to the message presented.
