General Math Information

Communication

I am thrilled to be able to teach your child mathematics! Please email me straight away if you have concerns, or questions, regarding the program or your child's progress. (You can email me too if you child tells you something great about math!)

I am always happy to meet with families to chat in person, or if your child has a math question please encourage him/her to drop by before school or after school (Tue., Wed., Fri.). There is a sign up sheet in the classroom if s/he would like to make an appointment in advance.

Math Supplies

Students are asked to bring an expo marker and ruler in addition to their textbook and composition book.

Washington State Mathematics Standards

St. John School Middle School Mathematics program is driven by the Washington State Mathematics Standards. Over the course of the year your child will explore and master the standards set for his/her grade and, review and retain the previous year's standards. Below are the links for each set of standards.

Washington State 5th grade Math Standards

Washington State 6th grade Math Standards

Washington State 7th grade Math Standards

Washington State 8th grade Math Standards

Each child has these standards in a one page format and a record sheet to track his/her individual progress mastering and retaining the standards. Ask your child to show you regularly how s/he is getting on in math!

Prentice Hall Mathematics

The Prentice Hall Mathematics textbooks are used to help teach to the Washington State Math Standards.

Math Facts

It is vital that by middle school math facts are memorized. Math facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to at least 12) are the foundation for other skills and concepts to be taught at this stage; they are used on a daily basis.

Homework

Your child will have approximately 20 minutes of math homework pertaining to the skills being learned in class. If math homework takes more than 30 minutes a night please sign your child's homework and ask them to move onto the next subject. If time permits they may come back to the math.
Parents - please email me if not finishing math homework becomes a reoccurring problem.
