Bienvenidos!

Welcome to the 2011-12 school year. This will mark my eleventh year in the classrooms of St. John School. The goal of the Middle School Spanish program is to provide students with authentic language exchange opportunities. Graduates of the Spanish program are competent in basic Spanish communication. More importantly, students are aware of the many Spanish dimensions that make up the web of culture and community. With the growing presence of Hispanics in our immediate communities the importance of speaking Spanish is paramount to student success. In 2009 Spanish speakers made up 16 percent of America’s population. The Pew Research Center forecasts that number to surge to 29 percent by 2050. For information on why learning Spanish is important for students click here.

Middle School Spanish Homework

8th Grade: (Halley)- Read Enrique's Journey Chapter 3. Prepare for assessment (1/27) on Unit 1 grammar concepts. Additionally, spend some time reviewing the Deadliest Journey video here.

Boca-River video here

7th Grade: (M-Walker)- Design a fashion magazine or app that includes Unit 2 clothing vocabulary. Due Thursday, 1/26.

Spanish Schedule

Middle School students take Spanish for one complete trimester (forty-five minute classes, five days a week for twelve weeks). Students make progress quickly as they practice Spanish on a daily basis. In addition to language instruction, time is spent studying the culture and customs of South America, Central America, and Spain. Consult the list below to find out when your student's homeroom class has Spanish.

First Trimester:  (8th) McFarland and (6th) Brumback

Second Trimester:  (8th) Halley and (7th) M-Walker

Third Trimester:  (7th) Tice and (6th) Sullivan

Sister School and Parish News

Our first pizza lunch will take place on Sept. 28. Special "gracias" to all the parents who assist in providing and serving the lunch. This is great opportunity to support our Sister Parish and School in Peru. Look for further pizza dates and information in NewsViews. The Amigos de Peru parish group meets the first Tuesday of the month at 7:00pm in Quigley Hall to discuss ways to support the mission of our sister relationship.

Special Announcements

We have much to celebrate as we begin the new academic year. The school welcomes our new principal Mrs. Bernadette O'Leary.
